Life in The Dalles means living in an area filled with culture and history. Lewis and Clark camped in The Dalles in both 1805 and 1806. The town was also known as a Native American trading center and was one of the first incorporated cities in Oregon. Today the area is known for its agriculture (sweet cherries, grains, apples, and more), a Google data center, Columbia Gorge Community College, and The Dalles Dam.

At Beachwood Eatery, you can enjoy a number of classic American favorites, including burgers, seafood, sandwiches, and more. Cousins' Restaurant & Saloon is a well-known spot in The Dalles. It offers a retro spot where you can enjoy homestyle American fare.
 
As you head out for some shopping, you can't miss Klindt's Booksellers & Stationers. This charming local spot is recognized as the oldest bookstore in Oregon — open since 1870. 
 
Sunshine Mill is also a popular venue in The Dalles. Here you'll find not only a well-known mill but also weekly movie nights during the summer, live music performances throughout the year, and a great place to catch up with friends over drinks in a venue with both a cool indoor and outdoor vibe.
 

Things to Do

The Dalles boasts a number of interesting things to do. Road cycling is a popular pastime in the local area, especially along the Columbia River. Fishing in and along the Columbia River is a  popular activity for local anglers. Known as an angler's paradise, The Dalles serves as a jumping-off point, with easy access to a number of rivers, encouraging local aficionados to try out different spots to find their favorite. The Tom McCall Nature Preserve nearby, complete with its 2.2-mile loop, is a great place for residents to hike, bird watch, and take in the area's assortment of wildflowers.
 
At the local parks, including Lewis & Clark Festival Park, Riverfront Park, and Sorosis Park, you'll find a number of regular events designed to encourage people to get out and participate in the many activities offered by the local community.
